My name is Cicero James, and I died last Thursday.

I know how it sounds, and the rest of what I have to tell you is just going to make it worse. But it's true. I died, and I came back. And the rest of it—why it happened, what it means, and most importantly what we’re going to have to do about it—is what I need you to hear.

I’m going to start at the beginning, and I’m going to tell all of this as faithfully as possible. I’m going to try to bring you along for the ride. It’s all coming out in a rush, so if I don’t tell it quite right, or if I muff a word or use bad grammar or something, try not to hold it against me.

And if I don’t manage to convince you… I understand. No harm, no foul, no hard feelings. This is all insane to anyone who hasn't lived it.

But if you're in, then you’re in, and here we go.

Rave Reviews for “Cicero James”

Emerson's novel is an inventive take on the urban fantasy genre that blends myth, magic, and religion to create a unique world that manages to feel fresh and familiar at the same time. Emerson's prose is sharp, funny, and very human; the title of the very first chapter is the welcoming phase, "OK, Here's the Deal." Although Cicero's narration could've come across as the product of a familiar fantasy-character type, he comes across as vibrant and complex, and his sense of empathy and snappy but realistic voice effectively drive the story forward. A thrilling and inventive urban fantasy adventure.

4.4 out of 5 -- IndieReader Approved
An urban fantasy with a through-the-wardrobe vibe, this novel nonetheless recalls Lev Grossman's "The Magicians." Funny, action-packed, and well-characterized, it's a novel of good-versus-evil and the power of choice. The first in a series, it deftly sets up a unique magic system and parallel world of [Miracle] Workers.
Fans of urban fantasy will love Hal Emerson's funny, action-packed CICERO JAMES, MIRACLE WORKER, thanks to its engaging protagonist and unique spin on magic (as well as those who wield it).

This is an intense read that will drive you forward from start to finish. The first-person narrative from the perspective of our protagonist makes all the difference. Trust me when I say you can't help liking this character. The plot is fantastic, which helps the pace move along perfectly, keeping you on the edge of your seat most of the time. You will laugh, cry, and feel every bodily sensation as described by our leading character. I loved the concept of this story and enjoyed the unraveling of the lore. A strong theme of hope and belief permeates the pages, which is why Cicero James, Miracle Worker is a must-read. Please take note that there is some strong language, but it only enhances the depth of the story.

...What really stands out, though, is the tone. Cicero's narration is biting and self-aware, full of dry humor and vivid descriptions that make even the darkest moments oddly entertaining. But it's not all jokes—Emerson weaves in moments of real vulnerability and introspection as Cicero grapples with his own limitations, fears, and responsibilities. It's this emotional depth that gives the book weight and makes Cicero such a relatable and compelling character....

I found it hard to put the book down, eagerly flipping through the pages as fast as I could. The characters were genuine, and despite the magical elements, the story felt realistic. Cicero often displayed a sharp wit, and I appreciated his exchanges with the other characters. This story is skillfully crafted and contains all the components for remarkable success.

4/5 stars -- "Loved It", Reedsy
Cicero's narrative is peppered with much-appreciated and relevant millennial humor that lands really well alongside the almost non-stop action. Since he knowingly establishes himself as the narrator of the events he recounts for a specific purpose, that set-up allows him to consciously break the fourth wall when telling his story, which also works really nicely with the genre of urban fantasy. Overall, Cicero James, Miracle Worker is a deeply immersive and thrilling read, set in a gritty, intricate world with unique and compelling premises - highly entertaining, funny, and action-packed.
